The authentic Ikat sarees, also known as Pochampally sarees, originated from Bhoodan Pochampally in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district and Puttapaka in Telangana. They usually have traditional patterns in Ikat dye on them.

Ikat sarees have a double Ikat weaving technique, just like Pochampally and Patola sarees. The only difference between Patola and Pochampally sarees is their design and geographical location.

History

Ikat sarees or Pochampally sarees date back to the 1950s. Pochampally Ikat sarees give a grand and luxurious look along with utmost comfort because of their silk and cotton mix fabric.

Ikat sarees usually pose of traditional tie and dye methods. Ikat sarees are of two types - Warp ikat or Single Ikat and Double Ikat.

Warp Ikat or Single Ikat

It is a tie-and-dye method where the warp is dyed and then woven with the weft.

Double Ikat

In this process, both the warp and the weft are first tyed and dyed and then woven together.

Types

Different types of Ikat sarees based on weaving technique

Sambalpuri Ikat

The intricate and beautiful Sambalpuri ikats are woven in Odisha's Sambalpur.

Patan Patola

A rare technique of Double Ikat weaving, Patan Patolas are woven in Gujarat.

Puttapaka

Another kind of Double Ikat weaving, Puttapaka sarees of Nalgonda district are also one of the most royal and luxurious weaving.

Pasapalli

Pasapalli Ikat sarees are woven in Odisha. The word Pasapalli is derived from board games, like ludo.

Fabric

The fabrics used in Ikat or Pochampally sarees are mostly of three types: cotton, silk, or SICO (a blend of silk and cotton).

Ikat sarees are usually lightweight, exquisite, neat and gorgeous which make them a favourite for every woman! Moreover, they are easy to carry and look royal.

Motifs and colours

In traditional times, Ikat sarees had only geometric designs and patterns on them. But with the change in times, the designs and patterns have also changed.

One can now spot floral motifs, leaves motifs, eccentric circles and beautiful paisley designs on an Ikat saree.

Some sarees even have horizontal or vertical lines, along with booties and other motifs.

Ikat sarees also come in a variety of bold and beautiful colours. From tomato reds to sky blues to royal blues to jet blacks to scintillating whites to resplendent greens to bright yellows to majestic pinks to exquisite purples, the Ikat sarees come in a plethora of colour options.
