Origin of the Banarasi saree

Banarasi sarees originated in the holy city of Varanasi and are one of the finest sarees among the variety of drapes available in India. The sarees are woven with fine silk and have intricate designs of Zari buttis, which make them heavy yet luxurious.

History of Banarasi saree

The earliest mention of Zari textiles and brocade for Banarasi sarees was found in the 19th century. With silk weavers migrating from Gujarat during the famine of 1603, it is thought that silk brocade weaving started in the 17th century.

The weaving of brocades with intricate designs, whilst using gold and silver threads, became the speciality of Banarasi sarees during the Mughal era.

Pure Silk (Katan)

A plain silk fabric, Katans have pure silk threads which are twisted and then woven into pure silk sarees. Organza (Kora) design with silk & zari

Jangla Banarasi saree

These sarees have a particular print with vegetarian motifs, such as florals and leaves, on the whole saree.

Tanchoi Banarasi saree

This style has paisleys or Labyrinth woven by zari all over the body of the saree. This kind of print is also popular among brides, as these have colourful weave patterns that make it look royal.

Cutwork Banarasi saree

These sarees are less expensive than all other types of Banarasi sarees because they are made using the cutwork technique on a plain saree. Some cotton mixed with silk is used in the design. Jasmines, marigolds, creepers, and leaves are the most commonly used motifs in cutwork Banarasi sarees.

Tissue Banarasi saree

The most delicate sarees of the lot, Banarasi Tissue Sarees, are woven with golden zari weft. The most popular design used in these sarees is a lotus floating in a radiant pond, woven with golden zari. The water drops in this design are made with the cutwork technique.
