Devotees from all over the country are pouring in, to the Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu to witness the re-emergence of the 12 feet idol of Athi Varadhar. The deity will be kept for the Darshan for 48 days, starting from 1st of July to 17th of August. This Occasion has grasped the attention as it happens once in 40 years.

The history says that the Idol was carved from the Athi tree and so the name. The idol which is about 12 feet was immersed into the Ananthasaras, the large pond within the famous Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple to protect it from the invaders and somehow this worked out.

It is expected 1 lakh (or) even more devotees are expected to turn up for this rare and once in a life time event from all around the country. Although the government has pulled out all the stops to make the necessary arrangements that would make everyone’s darshan smooth, we at Kancheepuram Varamahalakshmi Silks has compiled a checklist that can help you with your visit. Here it goes-

  • The event will commence from 1st of July until 17th of August. So, plan your visit wisely in the mid-time to avoid the huge crowd.
  • Avail the advantage of morning darshan. It starts around 5 AM, the eco of cool breeze coupled with the tranquillity of the temple will surely give you a harmonious experience.
  • Devotees apart from Kanchipuram Taluk are allowed to see Lord Athi Varadar from 6AM to 2PM and 3PM to 5PM
  • The government has arranged special buses to the Kancheepuram for this occasion. Orikkai, Olimuhammedpet and Pachaiyappa’s college are the other bus terminals, which are set up beside the main one in Kancheepuram.
  • If you have planned to travel on your own vehicle, then this is for you. The government has arranged parking slots for private vehicles at Pachaiyappa’s College.
  • Avoid these dates- July 14, 15, 16 – For VIPs and VVIPs. &July 20 – Expected visit of Tamil Nadu Governor.
  • The authorities are all set to provide access to free drinking water, public toilets, first aid & etc.
  • The hotels are allowing only for 12-hour booking for now. So, the charitable organizations are making arrangements for wedding halls to accommodate the Pilgrims.
