Shri Athi Varadhar Vaibhavam

The story starts with the anger of Goddess Saraswathi, who had a misunderstanding with her husband Brahma and in a fit of anger took away his divine wand to retrieve which he performed the Aswamedha yagna in the Athi forest, now Kanchipuram.

Sarawati runs as the Vegavathi river and tries to interrupt the Yagna, when Vishnu emerges from the holy fire as Athivaradhar. Saraswati is pacified and the yagna continues. Viswakarma carves out a body for Athivaradhar using a fig tree and He then agrees to stay in Kanchipuram atop the Elephant Hill.

Due to the huge Muslim invasions on to the Indian Country, many of the temples and the Mula Virat’s idols were also destroyed in the same pattern. The priests of the Athi Varadhar planned to hide the idol in the temple tank to protect it from destruction. And it worked out.

The idol of Athi Varadhar will be raised for every forty years and will be kept for the darshan of the devotees for around 45 days. The time-frame, this time falls from July-01st to August 17th.

The history of Athi Varadhar will amaze you, once you start digging deep into every detail. Nevertheless, of its history, it is pleasing and harmonious to visit the temple and the idol during its re-emergence. Mark your calendars to plan the visit sooner or later during this time.

It’s our pleasure for people at, Kancheepuram Varamahalakshmi Silks, a renowned silk brand in Kancheepuram to facilitate the details of the Athi Varadhar’s history.
